a A male patient was diagnosed with a postoperative anastomotic leak 7 days after Ivor-Lewis operation for esophageal cancer. The opening of the leak was estimated to be 2 cm in diameter. b A polyurethane sponge sutured to the tip of a nasogastric tube was inserted into the cavity of the anastomotic leak. c The cavity size decreased with granulation tissue and the fistula was closed after 16 days of endoscopic vacuum-assisted closure (EVAC) treatment. d The anastomotic leak was completely healed 31 days after treatment
